Why Teacher Presence Started
A radio interview, generosity of families and a passion for teaching and giving back – the reason for Teacher Presence.
The Radio Interview
It began when Mark Balla, founder of Operation Toilets, shared the devastating reality that some girls in India do not go to school because there were no toilets. So, he began Operation Toilets to help build facilities for these schools as well as provided support around hygiene and hand washing.
I was so saddened and moved by this powerful story that when I got home, I contacted Mark with an idea of how I could help him…
Generosity of Families
I had a realisation that a lot of money was spent on presents thanking school staff at the end of the year. Though these gifts are gratefully received, there was a thought that this money could be used in a more impactful way. I feel fortunate enough in life to already have cups and candles (and could do without the endless chocolates).
So, where other school staff feel the same, could we redirect this money to charities, such as Operation Toilets, who need funds to help others?
And that idea is how Teacher Presence began.
It’s a gift that gives a gift.
The Passion of Teaching
As an educator we strive to make an impact within the classroom. We want to model kindness, thoughtfulness and create an awareness of gratitude for what our students have in life and might not fully recognise. Teacher Presence allows this.
